The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) was introduced to the U.S. in 1825 by Joel Robert Poinsett. The brightly colored “flowers†are actually leaves (called “bractsâ€); the real flower on the poinsettia is the insignificantly small, yellow center.
